New Morrison Government Legislation

Updated: Apr 14, 2023

Remade in Australia is committed to raising awareness and educating Australians on plastic waste and recycling. The excessive amount of waste produced by humans is having a detrimental impact on the environment, which emphasises the importance of reusing and recycling. Recently, the Morrison government introduced new landmark legislation, which sees Australia take responsibility for the waste produced and covers the ban on waste exports. The ‘Recycling and Waste Reduction Bill 2020’ outlines a framework to manage waste and recycling within Australia; by investing in new technology and ideas to transform the industry.

Previously, Australia would export plastic, paper, tyres, and glass overseas; however, the ban will now force Australia to handle the production and disposal of these materials. Companies will be required to take on greater responsibility towards managing their products and recycling and reusing materials. This recent change will create economic opportunity by boosting the Australian economy, increasing jobs, and transforming the waste and recycling sector. Remade in Australia is focused on encouraging change in the recycling industry and promoting Australian sourced packaging in major supermarkets. This new legislation has created awareness on the current waste issue within Australia and will “increase access to high-quality packaging with high levels of recycled content” for Australian manufacturers.

This legislation provides hope that the government can contribute to the recycling industry and reduce the amount of waste produced within our borders. Australia has been exporting and funding recycling facilities overseas for far too long, it’s about time we take responsibility and ownership of our ongoing landfill and pollution crisis.
